Prepare from what you already have, ask for help on your glasses, open your questions when the conversation happens, and keep track of what you wanted to learn. Use a Plan when it helps, or start without one.
This guide describes VelvetSpeak 0.9.0. Current published Beta: 1.4.2. If your installed version differs, some labels and features will differ too. Check the version shown on Live before following the steps below.

Choose a Lens to browse its Plans or use no Plan. Open a website Plan to see its sources, next steps, questions and progress. Next steps gathers what is open across all your Plans.

Open History for saved conversations. Coaching, memories, Sound, Data & privacy, Account, Assistant, and Help are separate places here.
Start a conversation

Open Live
Use the current Lens, or choose one that fits: the eight VelvetSpeak Lenses, Everyday, Dating, Humor, Interview, Sales, Meeting, Conflict and Debate, and any Lens you made. Choosing a different Lens is optional.

Choose context, if useful
Use a saved Plan, add Quick context for this conversation, or open Plans → your Lens → Use no Plan. You can begin with no saved Plan and no extra setup.

Tap Start Live
Complete any required consent step and the optional transcription reminder if you enabled it. Accepting continues the Start you requested; merely opening the app does not start capture.

Check Listening
Use the microphone, glasses and service status on Live to check readiness. On G2, tap the VelvetSpeak boot card when shown and follow any on-screen readiness instructions.
Help on your glasses
Swipe down when you need help.
Ask from Listening, or swipe up to choose the kind of help. A request can use the recent conversation and permitted context. When there is too little to work with, VelvetSpeak tells you instead of promising a ready answer.
Swipe down · ask for help
From Listening, ask for help on what was just said. If an Answer Peek is visible, the same swipe opens that ready answer. In a list or card, swipe down moves to the next item or page.
Swipe up · choose the help
From Listening, open Quick Actions. In a list or card, move to the previous item or page.
Click · open or select
Open a visible Answer Peek, or the Main Menu when no Peek is showing. In a menu, select the focused row. On an answer content page, click to close it.
Double-tap · Back
Go Back from the current page toward Listening. Back does not end your session. Press-and-hold does nothing in VelvetSpeak.

What can I say?
Get several speakable lines for the moment. Browse them and click one to use it; it is recorded in Recent.
Answer / explain
Ask for a factual answer, explanation, or supported calculation. Use this when you need the answer itself rather than a line to say.
Smart Question
Browse three follow-up questions. Click a question to request its full answer; double-tap to go Back.
Catch me up
Get a short catch-up on the recent live conversation. The after-session record is in History.
Guide me
Ask for a private nudge about how to approach the conversation. It is there whenever you ask, with or without proactive coaching. Swipe through the guidance; click a named follow-up when you want more.
Recent
Browse help created during this live session, including answers that arrived while you were reading. This is separate from You → History.
Recall
Open available saved context about the selected person. The row appears when person-recall content is available; it does not display your dashboard Plan.
Read at your pace, then ask for more.
An open answer stays in place while you read. After its last content page, swipe down to the available options: Another idea, Guide me instead, or Explain more. Click the option you want. Another idea asks for a variation; it does not record a dislike.
The answer stays visible while a follow-up runs. A new answer waits in Recent; guidance waits until you return to Listening. Click an answer content page to close it, or double-tap Back from any page. Closing does not request more help.
Humor and wording
Choose Humor for playful lines, or use the current Lens for its tone. Humor Style and Risk are under You → Assistant → Social → Humor. You decide which suggestion fits the room.
Answers, calculations, and lookups
Use Answer / explain for facts or explanations. Ask explicitly for a public lookup when you need current information. Supported calculations use the calculator; lookup availability depends on the service and remaining allowance.
Ready answers
An Answer Peek previews an answer already prepared. Click or swipe down to open it. Answers that arrive while you are in a card or menu wait in Recent, without replacing what you are reading.
Main Menu
With no Peek visible, click from Listening. The menu includes Tone where supported, Lens, Plan, Prepared, Settings, End or Restart, and Start/Stop listening last. Double-tap to go Back.
Everyday, throughout your day.
Use Everyday for friends, family, errands, casual coworker conversations, and practical questions. Ask for words you can say, a clear explanation, or a recap of what was agreed. A saved person or Plan is optional; requested help can use the current conversation.
Catch me up can include relevant facts, open questions, decisions, commitments, and next steps. Everyday is the name used from v0.8.5; earlier versions call this Lens Rapport. Reply suggestions and Guide me keep their existing controls.
Wording suggestions can include an improvised example when a personal detail is missing. Answer / explain, recaps, and question assessments use their factual context instead. Check important details before relying on them; VelvetSpeak can make mistakes.
Prepared on your glasses
Open the question when the moment comes.
Your active Plan travels with you. The questions you wrote or accepted, the next steps still open and the lines you saved are one click away in the Main Menu, and a tap turns any of them into help you can use right now.
Prepared
From the Main Menu, open Prepared to see Questions, Next steps and My Lines from your active Plan. Rows appear only when there is something in them, and the whole row stays away when the Plan has nothing prepared.
Open a question
Browse the list and click a question to read it as a card. Tap the card for help asking it well; VelvetSpeak uses what has been said so far, or offers an opening when nothing has been said yet.
Lines and next steps
Tap a saved line for wording in the same spirit. Next steps are for reading on the glasses; mark them Done on your phone or the website.
Back, every time
Double-tap returns to the list, then the menu, then Listening. Nothing you open here starts capture, changes a setting or ends your session.
Plans, sources & question progress
Remember what you wanted to find out.
A Plan gives a conversation a goal and useful context. Add what you already have and let VelvetSpeak draft the facts, next steps and questions, or write the questions yourself when you want to track what the conversation covers across sessions. Plans are optional.

Write your Plan on the website
Sign in, then open Dashboard → Plans. Choose a Lens, add a goal and useful facts, and use Questions to add what you want answered. For example: Who owns the next step? When will it happen? What is the budget?

Add what you already have
Open Sources to paste notes, upload a document (TXT, Markdown, SRT, DOCX or a text PDF up to 4 MB) or pick a saved conversation. VelvetSpeak drafts a summary, facts, agreed actions with their owner, suggested actions and questions to ask, each pointing at the passage it came from. Accept, edit or dismiss each one. A suggestion is never shown as an agreement, and an unknown owner stays unknown.

Save, then Set Active
Autosave stores your edits. Set Active publishes that version for the Lens. Saving another edit does not publish it automatically; set the revised version active when it is ready.

Open Plans on your phone
Choose the same Lens. A delivered website Plan offers Show details with its next steps and question progress; edit its authored content on the website. Phone-created Plans have their own Edit action. Next steps gathers open items across all your Plans.

Use it for a session
Check which Plan is selected before starting. You can still choose Use no Plan. A website update is picked up for the next session rather than changing context halfway through your conversation.
Done and Reopen
Mark a question Done when you have your answer. Reopen it if you want to revisit it. You can do this on the website or phone. Your manual choice takes precedence over an automatic assessment, and progress carries into later sessions. Next steps work the same way: completion is explicit and reversible, and answering a question never completes an action.
After the conversation
With Recaps & coach reviews enabled and Standard or Full Memory Capture, the post-session review can assess the Plan questions as answered, partly answered, or not answered yet. It needs enough usable conversation. If the review is unavailable, use the available retry or mark progress yourself.
With Suggest next steps On, the same review also drafts next steps and questions to ask. They stay on your phone until you add them to a Plan. The count measures answered questions, not completion of your whole goal. Automatic results can be wrong; Done and Reopen let you correct them.
Delivery and refresh
Synced to your phone means your phone received the activated revision. It does not mean you have used it in a session. Progress can take a refresh to agree across devices. If a refresh is unavailable, the app uses the context it already has.
What is saved
Your website Plan, authored and accepted questions, next steps and progress are saved in your account. Sources you add are saved as text; the file itself is not kept. Progress sync carries status, not conversation excerpts. Assessment evidence follows your existing device capture settings and is excluded from Session memory and Coach Profile.
Delete a Plan
Delete the website Plan to remove it, its sources, its next steps and its progress from your account and, after sync, your phone. Deleting a source removes its text and, if you choose, the items drafted from it; it does not delete the original in another app. Existing saved conversation records remain under their own History controls.
Notes, Key facts, and My Lines
Use Key facts for concise details you want live help to read. Long website notes are not automatically all used as live context. My Lines open on your glasses under Prepared; tap one for wording in the same spirit, or leave them as your own reminders.
Your lenses
Sound how you want to sound.
Eight Lenses come with VelvetSpeak. Make your own from any of them on the website, arrange which ones show on your phone and glasses, and share the ones you made.

Start from a template
Open Dashboard → Lenses → New. Choose the Lens it is based on, name it, describe how you want to sound, add up to six lines of yours and the words to avoid, and set three dials: formality, energy and directness.

Hear it first
Preview shows what Help and What can I say? would offer for a few sample exchanges, next to the original Lens. It is a close guide to your glasses, not an exact copy: on Conflict, and Lenses built on it, What can I say? offers calm, neutral replies, such as a restatement and a question, rather than lines in your Lens's voice. Adjust and preview again until it sounds like you.

Save, then use it
A saved Lens reaches your phone at the next launch and never changes a session already running. Pick it on Live or on your glasses like any other Lens. Its Plans use the same fields as the Lens it is based on.

Arrange your picker
Hide any Lens, including the originals, put the ones you use first, and bring an original back with Restore default lenses. Hiding keeps a Lens's settings and Plans. Deleting a Lens you made is a separate, confirmed step.
Explore Lenses
Publish a Lens you made so other members can add their own copy, or add one someone else published. Copies are independent: when the author publishes a new version you can adopt it or keep yours. Report a listing that should not be there.
What is shared
A published Lens is its recipe: name, purpose, voice, your lines, words to avoid, dials and its sample outputs, under a display name you choose. Your Plans, notes, People, lines, conversations and account details are never included, and you see exactly what will be public before you confirm.
What stays the same
The eight original Lenses cannot be edited, copied or exported, and how they work stays with VelvetSpeak. A Lens you make inherits the behaviour of the Lens it is based on, so My Dating still acts like Dating and still shows the Flirting control.
Feedback that you can see
On a line VelvetSpeak offered from one of your Lenses, choose More like this or Avoid this wording to propose an edit to its recipe. You see the change before it applies, and you can undo it. Nothing learns about you silently.
Finish & come back later
End, Wrap, then You → History.
End Session on your phone
The active-session End Session control stays available while you use Live, Plans, or You. It finalizes and saves the session, then opens Wrap. Keep & close retains it; Delete & close removes it after confirmation.
End or restart on G2
Open Main Menu → End or Restart → Current Session. Choose Save & Restart, Discard & Restart, Save & End, or Discard & End. Read the confirmation shown for restart or discard choices; double-tap to go Back.
Find a saved conversation
Open You → History. Search your conversations, open one, and review the notes or transcript available under its Memory Capture setting. You can rename or delete it, create a phone Plan from it, or prepare next steps from it into a website Plan.
Start/Stop listening
Stop (or Pause) listening on the glasses Main Menu closes the microphone and keeps the session; nothing is recorded or sent while it is held. Choose Start listening to resume the same conversation. You can still use End Session on the phone.
Restart saves a new session separately while keeping the current Lens and settings; a newly synced Plan can apply to the next start. If the four-hour session-limit page appears, its Start new session action begins a fresh session. Other service or quota messages may need attention on the phone.
Your second app
VelvetLingo, on the same account.
VelvetLingo is a second app for Even Realities glasses, for live translation and reply choices. It signs in with your VelvetSpeak account, and your VelvetSpeak beta access includes VelvetLingo.

Get a code
Sign in at velvetspeak.com/connect/velvetlingo, or open Account → Apps & devices, and press Get short code. A code works once, for about 10 minutes. A key is a longer sign-in code you can paste instead.

Enter it in VelvetLingo
Open VelvetLingo in the Even Realities app on your phone. Type the code under VelvetLingo code and tap Connect with code, or paste a key under VelvetLingo API key.

Keep both apps
VelvetLingo has its own key, so connecting it never disconnects VelvetSpeak, and both apps can run at the same time.
One shared allowance
VelvetLingo uses the same account allowance as VelvetSpeak. Each meaning or set of reply choices counts as a suggestion, and listening time counts toward the same minute safeguards. Your usage on the Dashboard includes both apps.
Remove or turn off
Remove from this phone clears a saved key from that phone only. To stop a key working, use Turn off access on Account → Apps & devices.

Glasses & answers
First under You from 1.3.0: Answer length for Social and Work, Live transcript on glasses, Reply suggestions and their length, Glasses signals, and Prepare answers in advance.
Assistant
Social and Work hold family defaults and Lens-specific style, and a Lens you made shows the style control of the Lens it is based on. Assistant also holds language and Ask me before transcribing. Proactive coaching is one explicit switch.
Sound
Choose the glasses or phone microphone and use Recalibrate microphone to check the selected source.
Data & privacy
Choose Minimal, Standard, or Full Memory Capture; control after-session processing, Suggest next steps, Saved context for coaching, optional Session memory sync, and eligible-memory auto-save. Export, Wipe All, and Reset Settings are here.
Account
Connect your Beta key and check the account and usage information available to your device. On the website, manage your keys from your dashboard under Account → Apps & devices, and your Plans and Lenses from the menu.
New-install starting points include Medium answer length, a five-card ceiling, Reply suggestions Off, transcript display Off, proactive coaching Off, Suggest next steps Off, Saved context for coaching Off, and early answer preparation On. Standard is preselected in the first-run Memory Capture chooser. Existing installs keep their saved choices.

Good to know: The glasses row is Alerts; the phone row is Glasses signals from 1.3.0. With the transcript off, Alerts also shows a short answer preview box when an answer is ready from 1.3.2; older builds show only the bulb. With Alerts Off, the session, microphone, answer readiness, and swipe-down help keep working. Alerts is different from Stop listening: Stop (or Pause) listening on the glasses Main Menu closes the microphone and keeps the session.

Memory and privacy
Choose what the app keeps after a session, whether it may make a recap or suggest next steps, whether coaching may read saved context, and whether a summary is saved to VelvetSpeak's servers.

Session memory sync also requires this setting because its commitments, moments, and lesson come from the recap. With Suggest next steps On, the same review also drafts next steps and questions to ask. Manual Done/Reopen on a Plan remains available separately.

Good to know: Recaps & coach reviews must be On. There is no backfill: older sessions are not uploaded. Audio and transcripts are never saved there, but the summary is readable text rather than end-to-end encrypted. Live help can use eligible saved people, notes and the Plan under the existing consent and capture controls; coaching's saved-memory context also requires the Saved context for coaching permission. Plan question progress sync is separate from this summary setting, and question evidence is excluded from synced summaries and durable coaching memory. VelvetSpeak keeps the newest 100 synced summaries for at most 12 months. Turning sync off requests deletion; an unconfirmed failure is reported and retried.
